Making your First Cultural Map

    • Exercise 1

1. Go to this map.


2. Ask the person next to what the 3 most important places in his or her life are.


3. Add each location to the map and fill in the infowindow.

Who = Who are you interviewing?

What = What is the significance of this location?

Where = Give the place a name.

When = When did they use this place? Dates, years, time of year, etc.


4. Change the icon to one that symbolically represents the location.

Working with historical documents

1. Download the Coast Salish hand-drawn map (click here to download) from the workshop website.


2. Fly to “Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada” in Google Earth.


3. Add the map as an image overlay.


4. Align the map with the underlying Google Earth imagery.


5. Digitize at least 2 places from the historical map by adding them as placemarks in Google Earth.


6. Organize the map overlay and your placemarks into a folder.


7. Save the folder as a KML.

Mobile data collection in the field

      • Download ODK Collect from the Play Store.
      • Turn your device's GPS to ON.
      • Turn your device's wifi to ON and connect to wifi (or not, if you have a data plan for your device).
      • Open the ODK Collect app and open General Settings.
      • Change Server Settings URL to https://odkearthoutreach.appspot.com.
      • Go back to homescreen and select "Get Blank Form".
      • Select the Indigenous Mapping Workshop form and click "Get Selected".
